Nursel Sökmen Bayram is contemporary artist working in Istanbul across of a range of subjects and themes which coalesce around questions of identity.  Her work portrays peoples and cultures on the margins and the edge – perhaps appropriately for an artist working in a city that borders both Europe and Asia.  Femininity (Being A Woman, Faces), Politics (Covered) and religious iconography (Caves) are striking elements in all of her paintings, and combine in startling images of affective identities emerging from an unstable world.  She has exhibited widely and achieved both international and domestic acclaim for paintings which form powerful memories after viewing.
